Budapest is one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe, situated on the two banks of the river Danube with the hills and valleys of Buda on one side and the flat-lands of Pest on the other.
The city has not been spared by history, but could never be fully destroyed. Throughout centuries it survived sieges and hardships of occupation – and today harmoniously blends relics from Roman times (amphitheatres) and remnants from the era of Turkish occupation (thermal baths).
Its first permanent bridge (Chain Bridge, Lánchíd) spans over the Danube between Castle Hill on the Buda side and the headquarters of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on the Pest side.
On the Pest side stands one of the most beautiful parliament buildings in the world. One of its main thoroughfares Andrássy Street and the surrounding historical area, Heroes Square and the first Underground in Europe built on the turn of the Millennium, have been on the World Heritage List for many years, and the country also boss to 11 “Protected Areas” figuring on the World Heritage List of UNESCO! |
